The article considers the stylistic choice that takes the translator either to the stylistic norms of the original or those of the receptor. This choice is worthwhile taking into a wider framework of the dichotomy of the rhetoric of clearness and the rhetoric of ambivalence. Though universal in displaying clear and obscure word sequences in the natural flow of speech, the rhetoric of clearness is sometimes mistakenly associated with verbal excellence and the rhetoric of ambivalence – with verbal carelessness. The relationship between them is much more complex and has a great deal to do with the modern idiosyncrasies of communication. |
